In order to prevent erosion (wind & rain), grouting technology was used to stabilize and preserve a historical relic in Southern Japan. On this project, a non-yellowing, hydrophobic polyurethane was used to spray on the surface, in several passes, until the grout did no longer penetrate the crumbly, porous remnants of the earth-walls.
Prior to the surface stabilization operation, perforated grout pipes had been installed into the soils and walls. They in turn were injected with the same polyurethane, anchoring the grouted crust back to the structure. The site was an old smelter, where weapons were manufactured (Japanese-Chinese Wars) in the 18th Century.
ECO’s involvement in this project was limited to assistance with the monitoring and assessment of the grouting operation.
